HNO is currently exploring the feasibility of running an HP1 in Thunder Bay this spring.

Moving forward with the HP1 course is contingent on the number of eligible participants who have committed to the course. Please have any interested coaches register using the link below:

The application form will be open until March 31st, 2024. After this date, HNO will determine whether or not it is feasible to run this course based off of the number of applicants. If it is decided to move forward, money will then be collected in full from coaches who are successful in their application.

HNO High Performance 1

Hockey Northwestern Ontario is planning on running a High Performance 1 course this spring, contingent on commitment from enough coaches. The High Performance 1 is the required level of Coaching by Hockey Canada for U15 AAA, U18 AAA, and Junior A hockey. Coaches who are not coaching at this level may still take the course for coach education but will not be eligible to become certified until they are coaching at a level where HP1 is a requirement.

All Coaches regardless of position (head, assistant, associate etc.) have a responsibility to follow the procedures to complete their HP1 Certification within 24 months of taking the course.

Any Coach that during the 24-month process is not coaching in any capacity at a level that is eligible to be field evaluated must notify HNO’s Technical Director.

The HNO Technical Director will determine upon notification if field evaluation can be completed at the level the coach is currently coaching.

The Coach must immediately upon returning to a level eligible to be field evaluated must notify the HNO Technical Director or they will be subject to the following:
• Any Coach that does not complete the HP1 Certification within 24 months of the course (written assignment and field evaluation) by their own actions will be responsible for any additional costs incurred by HNO to complete their written assignment marking and/or field evaluation.

The cost of the HP1 course will be $1500 +HST.

• Hockey Canada National Virtual Weekend – May 24-26, 2024
• HNO in-class weekend (Thunder Bay) – June 7-9, 2024

HP1 Background
The High Performance 1 Coaching Program is an enriched development experience for coaches, which features online virtual, pre-recorded and in-class sessions. A post training written assignment and field evaluation will complete the certification process. As mentioned, the seminar (theory) will be delivered in three parts consisting of an on-line virtual portion, a recorded module portion, and an in-class portion. This seminar will provide an exceptional
opportunity for coaches to learn and will feature outstanding presenters who have vast experience within high performance coaching environments. Following the theory, coaches will further their development by completing, and receiving feedback on, a written assignment with support from a mentor. Participants will then be provided with an incredible opportunity for growth as a Hockey Canada trained Evaluator will observe a practice and game and conduct interviews on the ice sessions and the coach’s overall program.

Throughout the process, coaches will be provided information and tasks which will challenge them with the ultimate goal of furthering key skills including critical thinking, problem solving, interacting, valuing and leadership.

***Please note – Priority is given to those who require the training based on the HP1 Policy. For Full HP1 training, coach candidates are required to participate in all sessions that includes the National Virtual sessions, in-class weekend and all group sessions.***
